Random rotation

Halfway through correcting a transcription, my image just suddenly rotated. No idea of I pushed something, but I couldn’t figure out how to manually rotate it back. I reloaded the page and it returned to normal.

Hi Hanna! Thanks for this. Is it possible that you accidentally pressed the “R” button? That will rotate the image in the viewer. Likewise, “F” will flip it. Maybe to avoid confusion it would be helpful to have a pop-up that explains this?

I should note that these tools will not save the image in a new state or change the image that is sent to the AI model. So, for the moment, if an image is rotated the wrong way around, it’ll need to be rotated in image editing tool and then uploaded to Leo for optimal transcription performance.

Thanks Jon!
I’m not sure I understand - I assume if I type the letter ‘R’ in the transcription pane that won’t rotate it, so where would I click to make that work? Or is there a button I can’t see?

If you select the middle pane in the item view, i.e., by clicking on the image in the middle, so that it is activated as the receiver of input, rather than the transcription pane, then you’ll be able to use the keystroke commands for rotating and flipping. Do you see what I mean?

OK yes, I have figure that out. But is there a place where I can find these commands? Or a help menu?

Okay great. These features are not something we have designed or implemented ourselves. They come with OpenSeadragon, which is a Javascript library (i.e., a collection of prewritten code) for viewing zoomable images. Although the sequence mode won’t work, because we have our own system for navigating between images, you can find a list of commands on their GitHub: Keyboard Navigation | OpenSeadragon

(I’m part of the second test ‘wave’ but am using the free sign-up credits)

Is there a way to make rotating the image permanent? Pressing R turns the viewer, but when you navigate away from the page it goes back to the old (wrong) orientation. It would be useful if pressing R permanently fixed the orientation as opposed to changing the view but not the document itself. This would be quite useful because my phone (and I imagine other people’s phones too) often takes photos the wrong way around as the gyroscope gets confused when you point the camera downward, as you would when taking pictures of documents on a flat table in an archive.

I hope this is clear!

Thanks Conor! Now that image manipulation tools have come up several times, we’ve prioritised them accordingly. At least for the current iteration of the model, being able to rotate images the right way around might also improve transcription output quality.

We’ve introduced image manipulation tools, including cropping and rotation, in the latest version of Leo. See here: Version 0.1.9 released
